Trasformare semplici oggetti in arte è sempre stata la grande passione di Canan Çelik, che fin da piccola giocava a trasformare colore, carta, vecchi giornali, argilla, vetro, in cose sempre diverse. Da semplice gioco, la creatività è diventata lavoro: dopo gli studi in texile design a Vienna, Canan ha fondato una ditta famosa a livello internazionale, diventando ben presto una donna di successo. Tutto questo però le ha causato gravi problemi di salute che l'hanno portata a lasciare la sua carriera; come risollevarsi da una situazione così difficile? La risposta (e la soluzione) Canan l'ha trovata proprio nei giochi della sua infanzia, dedicando da allora tutta la sua vita all'arte. Nel 1990 scopre durante una mostra la "figura della Dea" ed inizia a studiare la rappresentazione della donna nell'arte; le prime sculture in ceramica di donne al bagno turco di Canan derivano proprio da questi studi e dall'altra sua fonte di ispirazione, il pittore Jean-Léon Gérôme. Canan Celik è oggi un'artista poliedrica; il suo studio e la sua casa sembrano un museo dell'arte curato con moltissimo gusto. Qui trovi di tutto e più: collezioni di Papier Mâché, di bonsai, di candele, fiori di tessuti e carta, busti di Buddha... Ma da dove viene tutta questa creatività? Chiediamolo a lei!

Cosa vuol dire per te "creare"?

Quando creo, dimentico tutto il resto: sono la donna piu felice del mondo, perché "creare" è per me una specie di terapia che nutre il mio spirito.

Il tuo materiale preferito?

La Terracotta, amo impastarla ed usarla.

Dove trovi l’ispirazione?

Tutto ciò che è intorno me che mi entusiasma: la natura, il mondo, la gente, la città. Tutto, tutto, tutto.

Com'è vivere ad İstanbul?

Ho girato quasi tutto il mondo e non ho mai visto una citta cosi eccitante! Ogni giorno succede qualcosa! Adoro İstanbul, amo vivere e lavorare qui. Mi interessa molto anche l'estremo oriente e la sua cultura.

When I create , I forget everything else : im the happiest woman in the world, because "create" is for me a kind of therapy that nourishes my spirit .

Earthenware, love knead it and use it .

Where do you find inspiration ?

All that is around me and that excites me : the nature , the world , the people , the city . Everything, everything , everything.

How is it to live in Istanbul ?

I have travelled most of the world and I have never seen so exciting city ! Every day something happens ! I love Istanbul, I love living and working here. I am also very interested in the Far East and its culture .
